| In Irish traditional music, the tin whistle is not only a great beginner instrument for those who want to learn more complex instruments, such as flute or pipes, but it is also a wonderful instrument in its own right. This whistle course is suitable for both the aspiring whistle player and others who simply need a starting point in the pursuit of Irish music. Students with all levels of musical experience are welcome. Students will be introduced to different types of Irish dance/instrumental music (such as jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, slow airs) as well as Irish ornamentation, which is necessary to create an Irish sound in one's playing. Special emphasis will be placed on traditional didactic methods, such as learning tunes by ear. Additionally, some background information on the history of Irish music will be provided. No one should expect to emerge from this course as an outstanding whistle player - hopefully though, students will be able to appreciate Irish traditional music at a much deeper level and begin to participate in that tradition themselves. Instructor will provide tin whistles at a cost of $10.00 or less. |
