| School Safety Tips |
|
Tip #1:
|
Parents of Elementary School Children should always check their child’s backpack
before leaving the house. Sometimes children put things in their bags that are
considered "contraband" by the Worcester Public Schools, with the consequences
being very severe for carrying those items onto school property.
|
|
Tip #2:
|
Any student found in possession of an air gun or air rifle on school property can
find themselves being suspended up to one year from the Worcester Public Schools.
This includes a BB gun,Pellet gun,or Paint Ball rifle. The local police are also
notified in order to confiscate the weapon and attempt to determine who the owner
of the weapon is for possible fines and other law-enforcement action.
|
|
Tip #3:
|
The use of Cell Phones on school property during the school day will result
in confiscation and possible disciplinary action by school officials.Any cell
phones brought to school must be kept in student lockers.
Although some parents and students feel it’s appropriate to have access to cell
phones during the school day in case of emergencies and other school safety
incidents, notifying family members immediately during the event can interfere
in school officials addressing the incident in a safe and effective manner.
Sometimes parents instincts tell them to show up at the school and rather than
be a part of the solution, end up interfering with the emergency management
response by public safety and school officials.

Tip #4:
|
Reporting To School Officials When Learning About Acts of Violence and Threats
Being Planned At Your School.
If there’s one thing school safety officials and school administrators have
learned the last few years in trying to prevent and combat youth violence in
our schools, is that students usually hear in advance about plans being made
to cause violence, and in some cases very horrific acts by the perpetrators.
In a lot of cases, classmates receive first hand information about plots being
made and sometimes don’t come forward to alert officials for fear of retaliation
or thinking those individuals won’t follow through on the threat.
In order to ensure a safe teaching and learning environment, it is essential
that parents talk to their children and convey the importance of reporting any
information they have regarding an immediate threat or potential act of violence
that is being planned against their school. A prompt response by school and other
safety officials can end up of saving lives and preventing harm to other students
and staff. We have learned "time and again" that most students who cause violence
and acts of aggression in schools want and need intervention by professionals and
school officials, which can turn their lives in a positive direction!

City Ordinance On Sidewalk Snow Removal
All city sidewalks have to be shoveled by property owners within 10 hours after a
snow ceases to fall. If you would like to report an unshoveled sidewalk, please call
the City’s "Snow Line" at (508) 929-1300.

Tip #7:

Canine Unit is helpful to keeping Drugs Off Grounds
The Worcester Police Department’s Canine Unit has been assisting the School
Safety Office recently by participating in Operation DOG (Drugs Off Grounds).
Officer Steve Cortes and one of his trained canine drug dogs (Bria) visited a
high school and middle school within the last few weeks and showed school
administrators how the special dog can detect or discover drugs in student
lockers. We are sending a stern message to students and parents that drugs
will not be tolerated on school property, and if they are found,long-term
suspensions and/or law-enforcement involement will occur.
Operation DOG will continue for the remainder of the school year.
